Alaska Dall Sheep
Alaska Sheep hunting is one of the most exciting adventures that the hunting world has to offer. The terrain is spectacular and it’s a special time of the year to be in Alaska’s wilderness. We hunt the Alaska Mountain Range in the high alpine meadows. Here we find beautiful fragile Arctic flowers, hanging glaciers, and breathtaking panoramic views. Alaska Dall Sheep share their habitat with several other animals. During August it is not unusual to see Wolverine in the high mountains along with Marmots and Caribou. They are often clinging to the side of a mountain where you wouldn’t even think the Sheep would go. The Wolves also like the high country during the fall season.
We are hunting for a mature ram of 9 to 10 years of age. These older Dall Sheep will normally have horns that average 36 to 39 inches in length. They traditionally have tight curls with spectacular flaring horns. Older Rams of 11 to 12 years of age have the capability of breaking that magical 40 inch barrier. Many Rams have been taken out of this country that measured well over 42 inches.
We normally do some pre-season scouting and set up a small base camp where we will be dropped off to begin the hunt. I like to find small pockets of Rams that other hunters have not bothered. We will often hike 5 or 6 miles to get into the better Sheep hunting. We will take a small quality 3 man tent that is constructed to keep us dry in the worst weather conditions.
For safety, the guide carries a basic first aid kit and a means of communicating with the base camp. In the unlikely event of an accident or any life threatening situation each guide has a SPOT unit to summon, via satellite, immediate evacuation. The guide will have good quality binoculars and a spotting scope. You should also bring a good pair of binoculars because a lot of time will be spent glassing for Sheep and other big game animals. This is a great hunting experience as you move through some outstanding Sheep habitat. This area also has a lot of Grizzly Bear and Black Bear that will be feeding on the high blue berry patches. There are also Wolves, Wolverine, and a few Caribou.
You need a good back pack to carry a sleeping bag and pad and your personal items. Between you and the guide you’ll be carrying the fly camp and the food. You don't have to be a champion athlete but plan on doing some exercise and coming in decent condition. It will make your hunting experience much more enjoyable.
The hunt for a Trophy Dall Ram in the Alaska Mountains is a fantastic and exhilarating experience.
