Alaska Moose
Our Alaska Moose hunting camp is located in Alaska’s game unit 6A on the rugged Gulf Coast of Alaska near Yakutat. This special herd is located on private land and we have been given the exclusive permit to hunt there. The trophy bulls in this herd have good genetics and big bulls have recently been taken that exceed 73 inches in width with good strong tines. These Trophy Moose can weigh over sixteen hundred pounds and stand nearly 7 feet tall at the shoulder.
In this far north Rain Forest there is an abundance of rainfall which produces a wide variety of succulent plants and willows. This lush forage abounds during the spring and summer months and gives the necessary nourishment to stimulate the phenomenal growth of the bull’s antlers, which are covered with soft velvet. Their growth slows and the horn begins to harden in mid August. In the summer the bulls are solitary animals and spend most of their days feeding. During the first few days of September, with the decreasing daylight and colder frosty nights, the bulls will begin to scrape the velvet from their antlers. At this time they will start moving and will end up with the cows on the traditional breeding grounds. They are partial to the edges of the swampy tundra where it meets the Spruce trees and the Willow thickets. It is not at all uncommon to find 3 or 4 bulls gathered with a group of 10 to 15 cows. Normally the rut will be in full swing in late September and will continue through mid October.
Hunting the Alaska Bull Moose during the rut is a great experience. As in hunting for most of Alaska’s big game, glassing from a look out is the most common method of hunting. We’re looking for the flashing antlers of a big bull. When a true trophy is seen a stalk is planned which often takes us right into the middle of the bull’s harem and the action. It's not uncommon to hear the soft calling of the females and the grunting of the bulls or to catch a glimpse of a big bull as he chases off a rival. Calling and grunting is a method that is productive during the rut. After a Trophy Alaska Moose is harvested the work really begins. All of the meat along with the trophy must be packed out and taken back to camp. This can often take several days.
We feel fortunate to be permitted to hunt Moose on this unique piece of private property. It is located at the foot of the Mount Saint Elias Mountain Range and stretches out on the Ocean Coast for about 27 miles. Having the exclusive hunting permit allows us to become wildlife managers. We will be able to provide special care and enrich the natural food source to improve the overall health of the herd. The number of Trophy Moose harvested will be limited and we will be able to increase the trophy size by increasing the age of the bulls taken to between 8 and 12 years old. When this stage of development is achieved we feel there will be a number of Trophy Bull Moose in the herd that will measure in the mid 60 inch to 70 inch plus range.
In times past Alaska Moose were not considered to be high on most hunters trophy list. However, now they are becoming increasingly popular and the possibilities for an outstanding specimen are diminishing each year. Don’t wait to add a huge Alaska Moose to your trophy room. Come and visit us on the Gulf Coast of Alaska for an unforgettable Alaska Moose hunting experience.
