Alaska Mountain Goat

The Mountain Goat is surely the true monarch of Alaska. They inhabit the high mountains along the Gulf Coast of Alaska. Mountain Goat hunting is not for the faint of heart as these beautiful white majestic creatures live in terrain that is as challenging as any hunting country on earth. We hunt them on the rugged coast from Prince William Sound to the Wrangell Saint Elias National Park near Yakutat. This is wonderful country that is also full of Black Bear, Brown Bear, Moose, and Wolves. Along the coast there are thousands of shore birds, several species of Whales, and the last stronghold of Sea Otters. This is a primeval land where hundreds of glaciers can be seen and the largest on earth crawling down into the ocean.

Mountain Goats live among the lofty peaks and cliffs in the early Summer and Fall feeding on the grasses and sedges as they fatten up and prepare for the coming winter. In September, the snows bring the Mountain Goats down from higher altitudes onto their lower winter range. They are much easier to hunt at these lower altitudes and some are even taken close to the beach.

A big Billy Mountain Goat is truly an outstanding Big Game Hunting Trophy! They can easily weigh well over 200 pounds. A Goat taken in October or November has a cape that is thick and luxurious and will have creamy white hair that is 6 to 8 inches long. Quite spectacular!

On the fall Goat hunts the Black Bear are also in great condition and it is possible to add this trophy to your hunt. The Black Bear have put on a lot of weight feeding on Salmon and ripe berries. They are now ready to dig a den and go into hibernation. Their hair is raven black, thick, and long.
